Tips for Sellers

Pick the right improvements. You might want to update your kitchen or a bathroom for your own comfort, but don’t expect to recoup the project’s whole cost when you sell your home. In today’s market, you might get the best return if you spruce up the outside of your home by adding a wood deck, energy-efficient windows, or new siding, according to a nationwide survey of real-estate professionals conducted last year by Remodeling magazine. (For more, see “Remodeling projects”.)

Easy Addition

Besides helping you to relax, saunas can promote overall health by eliminating toxins in the body. With the latest products, you don't need to visit a spa to get these benefits; it is easier than ever to install one in your home. Choose a generator that can be installed into an existing shower, or go the extra step, and purchase a full unit, often equipped with extras like aromatherapy and chromatherapy.

Avoid Confusion - Get it in Writing

A written contract, spelling out all the details, should always be used, even on small projects. Avoid contractors who refuse to put it in writing. Keep in mind, any promises that the contractor makes will be difficult to enforce unless they are in writing.
The contract should contain the full name, street address and phone number of the contractor as well as the home owner. It should also have an agreed upon price, complete description of the work to be done, and materials (grades and type) to be used, the starting and completion dates, clean up after the work is finished and the payment schedule.
  • Never sign a contract with blanks to be filled in later.
  • Never pay a remodeler or contractor the entire cost of the work up front. On remodeling projects, never pay more than one-third down.
  • Never release the final payment until the project is completed according to the contract. You should also have proof that all suppliers, employees and subcontractors have been paid by the contractor.
Remember that changes cost money, especially if you decide to make changes after the work begins. To avoid misunderstandings, make sure that your agreement with the contractor, concerning both the changes and costs, are put in writing and added to the original contract. Even if you follow these guidelines, problems may arise. Take time to talk with your contractor about your project and try to work out any disagreements.

National Veterans Day Ceremony

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The Veterans Day National Committee also selects a number of regional sites for Veterans Day observances throughout the country. From stirring parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes to distinguished veterans, these events serve as models for other communities to follow in planning their own observances.

Why are seven of the top 10 value-yielding projects of the 33 projects ranked by Realtors in this year’s Cost vs. Value Report exterior projects?
Lots of reasons, the first of them being cost. In an economy where frugal is the word, each of the exterior projects comes in at less than $15,000. The project with the greatest return — a mid-price–point entry door — costs less than $1,200.

Black Friday Deal Predictions - BBB News Center

Black Friday Deal Predictions - BBB News Center: "With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about Black Friday. The day-after-Thanksgiving event is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, with stores dramatically reducing prices of merchandise in hopes of staying in the black for the holiday season. In light of the economic downturn, what kinds of deals will we see this year? PCWorld offers some predictions.

Deals probably won’t be as good as two years ago, and analysts believe stores will wait until the very last minute to dramatically markdown items. This means we may not see the best sales on Black Friday or Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving).

This holiday season, shoppers can look forward to many deals on electronic items. Analysts believe HDTVs will remain a big ticket item this year. Shoppers are more likely to find bigger deals on larger models. If you’re buying a tv, you might as well buy a Blu-ray player to go with it; expect to score deals on these as well. Experts believe netbooks will not be as popular this year, but e-reader sales are likely to figure heavily in the Black Friday landscape, as well as smartphones.

PCWorld points out that most of the deals found in stores can also be found online. Skip the doorbuster madness, and shop from the comfort of your own home while you munch on Thanksgiving leftovers.
